My ferrets cagemate died and I want to adopt a new fuzzy BUT she has had ECE in the past month. Wait?
I am sorry to hear of your loss. Ferrets are such lovable pets. If you really want to look into getting another ferret to complete your crew I would wait until you know for sure the ECE is gone. Recovered ferrets can shed the virus in stools for 6+ months after initial infection. You can confirm if the virus is shedding by using a fecal PCR test to identify the marker or have an intestinal biopsy done. I would make sure both of your current ferrets are completely cleared of the ECE before introducing another ferret. Because the virus can be shed for up to 6 months following infection, and can be transmitted on clothes, shoes, ferret-to-ferret contact, etc,. You should always wash your hands and clothing between handling other ferrets. and make sure to sanitize their cage often to help clear the infection
