What happens if a nuclear bomb explodes in outer space?

If a giant asteroid was flying around and another asteroid hit it, it could knock the asteroid in the path of Earth. Of course we are going to shoot nuclear missiles at it, but what is the cost? Is there going to be radiation in space? Could the radiation from the explosion reach Earth?
